Submissions

Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal. All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected.

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.

Works

Works spresents artistic work as work: visual art, poetry, moving image, sound, score, artist's book, documentation of performance or installation. Each piece is accompanied by a short statement, up to 1500 words, situating the work in relation to the maker's inquiry.

Works is selected editorially rather than peer reviewed. Selection attends to the strength of the work itself and to whether the accompanying statement opens the inquiry rather than explaining the piece away. Editors respond within eight weeks.

Authors retain all rights in the artwork. Publication grants Liminalia a non-exclusive right to reproduce the work in the issue and archive. Contributors are responsible for permissions where a work contains third-party material or identifiable people.

Reflections

Reflections publishes essays, dialogues, interviews, field notes, and reflective writing addressed to the practice of arts-based research. Work here is often situated and provisional: an account of a method that partly failed, a supervision relationship reconsidered, a studio problem that reshaped a research question.

Reflections uses single-blind peer review. One reviewer reads each submission and knows the author's identity; the author does not learn the reviewer's. Reviews assess contribution, clarity, and whether the reflective form earns its place.

Typical length is 3000 to 5000 words. Shorter pieces are welcome.

Articles

Research publishes full-length arts-based research and methodological scholarship, including work developed from masters theses and doctoral dissertations.

Research uses double-blind peer review. Submissions are anonymised before review and each receives two independent reviews before a decision. Reviewers are instructed not to attempt to identify authors.

Reviews are expected to be specific and usable. Reviewers are asked to name what the work is doing, to make revision requests concrete, and to distinguish requirements from suggestions. A reviewer recommending rejection is asked to indicate what a viable version of the project would involve.

Typical length is 6000 to 9000 words including references. Work that needs more room because its form requires it should say so in the cover letter.
